North Texas Officer Who Killed 15-Year-Old Boy Arrested and Charged with Murder

Roy Oliver, the former North Texas police officer who fatally shot 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, has been arrested and charged with murder.

Jordan Edwards was killed last Saturday while leaving a party in a Dallas suburb. Officers responding to noise complaints claim they heard shots fired in the area. Oliver opened fire on a vehicle being driven by Jordan's brother, striking Jordan in the head. The initial report claimed that the vehicle was backing up aggressively towards the officers, but body cam footage showed the vehicle was moving away from the officers when Oliver opened fire. Oliver was initially put on administrative leave, but was quickly fired from the Balch Springs Police Department.

Early Friday, the Dallas County District Attorney's office issued a murder arrest warrant for Oliver, after evidence presented suggested that Oliver intended to cause harm and commit a dangerous act against a person that resulted in death. According to CBS DFW, the warrant gave any officer authority to arrest Oliver, and allowed Oliver to turn himself in peacefully. Oliver ultimately turned himself in to the Parker County Sheriff’s Department Friday night and is being held on a $300,000 bond.

According to records made public on Thursday, Oliver was suspended for less than a day in 2013 for his courtroom conduct while testifying as a witness in a drunk driving case. The Dallas County DA's office filed an official complaint against Oliver and he was ordered to take courses in anger management and courtroom behavior.

The Edwards family attorney, Lee Merrit, called the arrest a great relief for the family, saying they feel the charge is appropriate for Oliver's actions.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department has said that the arrest of Oliver does not mean they have concluded their investigation.
