In an announcement that is blowing up fan groups across social media, a new 'Ghostbusters' movie set in the original film universe will be written and directed by Jason Reitman, son Ivan Reitman, director of the first two films.

Entertainment Weekly broke the exclusive story Tuesday night, confirming that Sony pictures intends to start filming in a few months with an expected release window of Summer of 2020. Jason Reitman told Entertainment Weekly that the new movie will definitely be a sequel to the original two movies,

This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.

This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.

In an attempt to set fans at ease and show that he has the passion for the job, Reitman assured audiences that he has a love for the original films and other iconic 80s comedies directed by his father,

I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.

I love everything about it. The iconography. The music. The tone. I remember being on set and seeing them try out the card catalog gag for the first time when the library ghost makes them come flying out. I remember the day they killed Stay Puft and I brought home a hardened piece of foam that just sat on a shelf for years. I was scared there was a terror dog underneath my bed before people knew what a terror dog was.

'Ghostbusters' creator and star Dan Aykroyd has been vocal in his criticism against reboot writer/director Paul Feig, saying that Feig didn't listen to Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman and blamed Feig for the exorbitant budget that resulted in the reboot not being financially successful. As recently as this past November, Aykroyd confirmed that the reboot would not be getting a sequel.

Jason Reitman appeared in 'Ghostbusters II' as the boy at the birthday party who told Ray Stanz that his dad says the Ghostbusters were "full of crap". He went on to an acclaimed career behind the scenes as the director of 'Juno', 'Up in the Air', and 2018's  'The Front Runner' starring Hugh Jackman.
