Adam Yauch, also known as MCA of the Beastie Boys has died at the age of 47. Back in 2009, MCA was diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland and lymph node.  He underwent extensive treatments, including surgery and radiation

Yauch co-founded the Grammy-winning Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike D. (Michael Diamond),  Mix Master Mike (Michael Schwartz) and Ad Rock (Adam Horovitz).

Last year, there were reports that MCA's condition was improving, but in a message to fans, he said those reports were premature.

He said, "While I'm grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer-free are exaggerated.  I'm continuing treatment, staying optimistic, and hoping to be cancer-free in the near future."

MCA wasn't able to make the Beastie Boys' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction last month and in his absence, the group opted not to perform.

He leaves behind a wife and daughter.

Update May 7, 2012 8:00 am CDT: Mike D. released the following statement and photo on the Beastie Boys Facebook page:

I know, we should have tweeted and instagrammed every sad, happy and inspired thought, smile or tear by now. But honestly the last few days have just been a blur of deep emotions for our closest friend, band mate and really brother. I miss Adam so much. He really served as a great example for myself and so many of what determination, faith, focus, and humility coupled with a sense of humor can accomplish. The world is in need of many more like him. We love you Adam. BTW this photo sent to me by a friend, (thanks Saslow) is just one awesome example of how NYC is such a unique place that amidst it's huge size and frenetic pace it really opens up it's heart in so many ways and on on so many levels in times like these. And though it makes me cry sometimes, it has been really amazing and moving to see.
