While there have been plenty of live bootleg versions of the new Mastodon track 'Chimes at Midnight' circling the internet for a while now, I've been patiently waiting for the studio version of the track to arrive.

I dunno what it is, but I hate to hear a song live before hearing the studio version, so I always hold out (unless I'm in attendance when they play it, of course, 'cuz I ain't leaving the room). Luckily, I didn't have to wait for the release of the band's sixth studio album, Once More 'Round the Sun, to hear the official version of the tune as the band have released the audio in the above visualizer.

Immediately upon listening, 'Chimes at Midnight' sounds like it could have been right smack in the middle of Crack the Skye or maybe even Blood Mountain. It's definitely different than what Mastodon were doing on the last album, The Hunter. Don't get me wrong, I love The Hunter (and every one of their albums for that matter) but I prefer the more spacey stuff they were doing on the aforementioned albums. So yeah - I'm digging the hell out of 'Chimes at Midnight'.

Give the latest offering from the mighty Mastodon a listen and be sure to pick up Once More 'Round the Sun when it arrives June 24. The album is available for pre-order at iTunes.
