Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Sentenced to 35 Years in Prison For Child Sex Crimes

Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a total of 13 offenses, most of which revolve around child sex crimes. Watkins admitted to the most heinous and disturbing crimes in rock history, and for his despicable acts, the singer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The 36-year-old singer had been using his rock star status to manipulate young fans for many years. This abuse of power culminated in relationships with two women, both of whom offered their newborn babies to Watkins for sexual purposes. Along with two counts of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault of a child under 13, Watkins pleaded guilty to an additional three counts of sexual assault involving children; six counts of taking, making and possessing indecent images of children; and one act of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

Watkins’ sentencing took place this morning (Dec. 18), as did the sentencing of the two anonymous women. Although BBC reports that Watkins stated he was “deeply deeply sorry” and “belatedly realized the gravity of what happened,” Mr. Justice Royce stated that the case “broke new ground” and “plunged into new depths of depravity” as he handed Watkins the 35-year sentence. Royce also cited Watkins’ “corrupting influence” and “complete lack of remorse.”

Additionally, South Wales, South Yorkshire and Bedforshire police departments are currently investigating whether Watkins committed sex offenses in Germany and the U.S. “This is complex and will take time,” South Wales Police write in a statement. “There are clearly links between the three investigations which cover a four-year period and involve numerous allegations and reports and the police response to each must be considered.” Police are also investigating a detective sergeant who possibly failed to act on allegations that Watkins had raped a 15-year-old girl.

BBC also notes that three reports were made to South Yorkshire Police between March and May 2012 relating to Watkins and that a member of the public reported child abuse allegations to Bedfordshire Police in October 2012.

Stay tuned for news on any further charges pressed on Ian Watkins. As previously reported, Lostprophets decided to disband a few months prior to Watkins’ verdict.
