Korn’s Brian ‘Head’ Welch: I Hate Religion But I Embrace Jesus Christ

One’s faith doesn’t always line up with what’s expected by the church, whichever one it may be. Korn guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch is a perfect example of that sensibility. Though he reiterates that he has a close relationship with Christ, the guitarist was recently quoted as saying, “I hate religion.”
Welch famously left Korn in 2005, becoming a born-again Christian and taking his faith to extreme lengths. Perhaps most famously, Welch had the likeness of Jesus Christ tattooed on his hand to prevent him from masturbating. However, Welch’s view of religion has changed a bit since those days, relating less to religious institutions than his personal beliefs.
“I like to get high on something, and when I asked the Lord to come and make his home inside of me, the spiritual high, it’s so real,” Welch tells Matt Pinfield of Fanpass. “And I hate religion. I don’t talk about religion at all, but the relationship through Christ is what I found. And I’m totally satisfied. Now I can enjoy raising my kid, I can enjoy jamming with music in Korn, I can enjoy anything I do. It’s the best high ever.”
Welch also addresses how his idea of rock stardom has changed throughout the years. “When you get that big, everyone’s, like, crawling after you and everything, and you start to believe, even if you don’t say it, you start to believe that it’s about you,” says Welch. “And what I’ve come to realize is it’s all about them, it’s all about the fans, it’s all about them and the music. You’re here to give to them, not to be some king rock star. It’s all about them.” [via Blabbermouth]
