The website Car Insurance Comparison has broken down the worst drivers state-by-state, ranking each state on individual categories with stats from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and then compiling results for an overall ranking. The individual categories include...

  • Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
  • Failure to Obey (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that involved Traffic Signals, Not Wearing Seat Belts, and Driving with an Invalid Driver’s License)
  • Drunk Driving (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that Involved Alcohol)
  • Speeding (Percentage of Driving Fatalities that were Speed-Related)
  • Careless Driving (Pedestrian & Bicyclist Fatalities per 100,000 Population)

So, for the million dollar question: How bad are Texas drivers? Well, according to this list, pretty darn bad. Texas tied with Louisiana for first place, ranking 3rd in Drunk Driving, 9th in Fatalities and Speeding, 12th in Failure to Obey, and 14th in Careless Driving.

Texas has made the Top 5 a home on this list for the past several years, ranking 4th overall in 2015, 3rd in 2014, 4th in 2013, and 3rd in 2011.
