Cover of Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ Featured in Bizarre Anti-Speeding Commercial

The Guns N’ Roses classic ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine has been used for what may be the most bizarre commercial against speeding ever made. To deter people from driving too fast, Northern Ireland’s DOE Road Safety created a commercial where an entire class of kids gets squashed by an out-of-control car.

The commercial utilizes a melancholic acoustic cover of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine,’ creating an atmosphere uncomfortably similar to one of those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA ads that have persuaded millions into helping neglected animals.

The Irish commercial is very effective at first, even using a bit of foreshadowing while a happy-go-lucky kid plays with a toy model of the very car that would later run off the road. After swerving while taking a sharp turn, the speeding driver flips his car about 30 times before taking out the entire group of kids. The Independent reports that the ad has been banned from airing on TV before 9PM.

“Since 2000, speeding has killed a classroom of our children,” says the ad’s narrator. “Shame on you. You can never control the consequences if you speed.” The commercial, which the Independent has compared to the SyFy cult film ‘Sharknado,’ is meant to illustrate the 28 children that have lost their lives due to speeding in Northern Ireland since 2000. It has since gone viral, amassing almost two million views on YouTube.

“The aim of this campaign is to challenge and dispel, once and for all, through this emotional and uncomfortable message, the false perceptions that many road users have as to the truly horrifying consequences of speeding,” says Road Safety minister Mark Durkan.
