Following their live chat at Ustream this afternoon (April 3), Garbage released the video for ‘Blood for Poppies,’ the leadoff single from ‘Not Your Kind of People,’ their first collection of all-new material since 2005′s ‘Bleed Like Me.’ The album will be released on their own STUNVOLUME label on May 14.

So much of Garbage’s longstanding appeal has been because of their ability to blend vintage guitar rock and modern production techniques into a really cool package. Think of the slinky guitar line of ‘Stupid Girl’ or the electronic rhythm of ‘Special.’ They’ve never been about lyrical depth, but they’ve been able to get away with it because, well, they’re really cool.

As a result, they’ve always been enjoyable but a tough band to bond with. ‘Blood for Poppies’ isn’t much different. It’s got a ‘Nuggets’-era guitar riff from Steve Marker and some hard beats by drummer Butch Vig. Speak-singing the verse, singer Shirley Manson gets by more on her attitude than vocal range or emotional commitment. In other words, it sounds like vintage Garbage, and it’s good to have them back.

The black-and-white video was directed by Matt Irwin and filmed in various spots around Los Angeles.
