Time capsules can be a fun way to preserve the past and help the people of the future learn about how things used to be, but only if the things preserved in the time capsule survive and aren't ruined by time and the elements.

In 1964, a time capsule was buried at the Regal Park Terrace theater in Charlotte.

Unfortunately for the North Carolina residents, 1964 time-capsule technology left a bit to be desired.

When the Charlotte capsule was opened, a "crock of slop" was revealed instead of the treasures that had been buried five decades earlier.

While everyone was bummed, was anyone really that surprised?
