Foo Fighters fans asked -- then raised $70,000 online -- and the Foos listened.

Dave Grohl and the boys announced they'll play a special show at the National Theater in Richmond, Va., on Sept. 17 after a crowdfunding campaign to bring the band back to perform in the area for the first time since 1998.

Rolling Stone reports it all started in March when a group led by fan Andrew Goldin kicked off the Crowdtilt Open campaign with a goal of selling 1,400 tickets at $50 each to a show that didn't yet exist. Donors' credit cards would only be charged if the show sold out and the money would be refunded if the band didn't agree to play.

"Rather than waiting, and waiting and waiting for our favorite band to come to us, we're making it happen," Goldin said in a mission statement. "We're selling tix to a Foo Fighters concert that the band doesn't have scheduled yet in the hopes that they'll come to our great city and play a show. Then if the band comes we all rock out.  If they don't come, everyone gets their money back. Every cent. So buy your tix, spread the word, and let's make some rock-n-roll history."

As of Saturday, the campaign had raised $70,026 and the band confirmed the date they would play the show on Twitter yesterday (Sept. 3):

And it's not as if Foo Fighters are working with a lot of free time. They're set to release their eighth full-length LP, 'Sonic Highways,' on Nov. 10 and debut an HBO documentary series following the band's journey to create the album in eight different cities on Oct. 17.
