After an exciting night of football that found the New England Patriots tapping the New York Giants 27-25 -- followed by post-game coverage that pushed CBS’ entire schedule back an hour -- the Foo Fighters invited Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen to help them celebrate the fourth night of their weeklong invasion of the ‘Late Show With David Letterman.’ Watch their performance of the Cheap Trick classic, 'Stiff Competition,' in the video above.

Earlier in the day, the Foos debuted the opening track from their upcoming album, ‘Sonic Highways,’ the absolutely perfect ‘Something From Nothing.’ So we thought to ourselves, maybe -- just maybe -- last night (Oct. 16) might bring with it an original tune (especially considering Nielsen is on the studio track of ‘Something From Nothing’).

But alas, Dave Grohl and his fellow bandmates rocked against expectations and blew fans away for a fourth straight night. With Grohl sitting behind the kit and drummer Taylor Hawkins handling frontman duties, the Foo Fighters and Nielsen tore through the 1978 tune like they've been playing it together for years.

And, as has been happening each night, the Foo Fighters were featured on 'Letterman' as more than just musical guests. “We have something special for you folks,” Letterman said as he introduced the hopelessly awkward comedic writer, Joe Grossman. Grossman gave us a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to pitch the Foo Fighters on a few sketches. Let’s just say, it didn’t go well for Grossman. “Keep working on it, Joe, keep working on it,” Grohl told him. “We’ll see you in about 2016.”

They will appear one more time this week on 'Letterman,' and if what we heard is true, there will be no special guests; perhaps that means we'll get a new track!

The Foo Fighters are gearing up for the debut of their eight-episode series on HBO, ‘Sonic Highways,’ tonight (Oct. 17). A couple of weeks later, on Nov. 10, their latest full-length album of the same name will hit store shelves. Get details on the RCA Records album here.
