First Trailer For ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

Last week it was an impressive first trailer for Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This week, Cap may have just been outshined by the first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

In a post-apocalyptic future for mutants, Professor X (yes, they will explain how he’s returned after being vaporized in X-Men: The Last Stand) and Magneto come together to fight the threat facing all mutants, but that must be done in the past as well as the present. Sending Wolverine’s consciousness into his younger self, Professor X hopes Wolverine can help guide the younger Professor X into action, leading a two-front and two-time period war on the mutant destroying Sentinels.

Even though X-Men: The First Class rewrote aspects of the original X-Men trilogy, this film is intended to be a continuation of both X-Men series as well as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine spin-offs. X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer has returned to direct this adaptation of possibly the most popular X-Men comic storyline of all time, blending old and new casts. James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), and Lucas Till (Havok) return from X-Men: The First Class joining Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellan (Magneto), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde, who was a major character in the original comic story and whose phasing abilities will be the facilitator of this story’s time-travel), and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) from the original X-Men films. The biggest name joining the cast is Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask, a military scientist who creates the mutant hunting Sentinels.

While Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine films haven’t lived up to the hype, the X-Men films have been terrific with the exception of the X-Men: The Last Stand. Seeing Bryan Singer return and blending the best of both X-Men timelines gives me hope that this could end up being the best X-Men movie to date. It really looks like Marvel is going to own the box office in 2014.  Not only is this shaping up to be an epic teaming on par with The Avengers, this will likely the be last time we see several of our favorite characters played by their original actors.  Both Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan are of an age making a return to more films seem unlikely, and rumors have been circulating that this might mark Hugh Jackman’s seventh and final appearance as Wolverine.  If this is truly their last X-Men film, it looks like they might be going out on top.
