Deftones’ Chino Moreno to Korn: ‘I Don’t Want To Tour With You’

Back in March, Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch speculated to German outlet Metal Heads that Deftones have little interest in touring with them.

“When we see ’em, it’s, like, ‘Hey, bro, what’s going on?’ But we’re not close with ’em,” Welch said. “They just like to do their own thing. We would like to tour with ’em again one day, but I don’t think they want to, so…but it’s all good. When we see ’em, we just don’t talk about touring. We’re just, ‘Hey, bro. How’s the family?’ Stuff like that.”

Now, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has confirmed Welch’s rumination, telling Metal Hammer that while it’s nothing personal, from day one his band has never had any inclination to embrace the nü metal style of music, of which Korn was a forerunner.

“We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with,” Moreno says. “It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan [Davis] would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say. I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’ The name of the genre was nü metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it.”

Despite not being touring mates in the foreseeable future, both Korn and Deftones have been saddled with complications on their current road jaunts in recent days. Moreno broke his foot at a gig in Germany this past Monday (May 1), while Korn has announced the postponement of several headlining dates throughout May. Korn’s recent South American tour featured Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s 12-year-old son Tye filling in for Fieldy on bass.
