Best Things To Do In Wichita Falls This Memorial Day Weekend – Thrashman’s Top Five
Memorial Day Weekend - the official start of Summer and one of my absolute favorite holidays. I mean think about it...beer, barbecue and warm weather that leads to ladies walking around in bikinis can be nothing short of awesome.
Lest we forget, Memorial Day is also the time to honor our fallen heroes who gave everything for our country and as a veteran, I definitely don't want to downplay the significance of the holiday but for the purposes of this post I'll highlight the best ways to enjoy your weekend.
Head out to Lucy Park
You've gotta love an afternoon in the park and with Lucy Park there are a lot of activities to choose from. For one thing the park is huge - 178 acres along the Wichita River that provides an excellent backdrop for your festivities. The park features 2 large picnic shelters that can be reserved for no cost, 5 smaller picnic shelters, 30 individual picnic tables and 34 grills to choose from for your Memorial Day barbecue. For the kids, there are three modular playgrounds and for grown-up playtime you can indulge in an 18 hole disc golf course (my preference, BTW), basketball goals, two sand volleyball courts and one concrete volleyball court.
Spend the day at Castaway Cove
You definitely can't go wrong by kicking off the summer at the water park and Castaway Cove Waterpark provides The Falls with acres of rides, slides and attractions. You can slide your heart out in Parrot's Perch, an open flume slide complex that features a 40-foot high tower complete with two open flume slides and one U-shaped water thrill ride. Or you can go for their open and enclosed flume tube slide complex known as Storm Watch Tower that consists of one open and one enclosed serpentine and corkscrew tube slides. The park also features a family play area, tidal wave pool, "Lazy River" tube floating stream, lagoon pool and a sand volleyball court.
Annual Crime Stoppers Fun Run
Here's one for the bikers. The Annual Fun Run is a fundraising event to keep the Crime Stoppers program running. Crime Stoppers pays rewards for information leading to the arrest of people who commit felony crimes. The bikes line up at 7:30am Saturday at Eddie Hill's Fun Cycles with the first bike heading out at 9:00am. Food and drinks are provided at every stop and there's a silent auction at the ride's final destination, Texas Roadhouse. The cost of registration is $30 for the rider and $15 for the passenger. For more details call Crime Stoppers at 761-7778 and ask for Officer Woodruff or Officer Esteves.
Take in some live music at The Iron Horse Pub
If you're looking for a traditional Irish pub atmosphere look no further than The Iron Horse Pub. Assuming that since you listen to The Buzz you're a fan of rock n' roll and there's plenty of live rock at The Pub this weekend. Kick the weekend off in style Friday night with San Antonio's Destruction Evolution along with hometown boys Fury. The show starts at 9:00. Saturday night showcases Kris Lager Band and their brand of traditional blues rock. Opening the show is Broadcasting On All Frequencies and Shawn Gregory with the doors opening at 9pm for ages 21 and up only.
Old Town Saloon's serving up some live music also
If you like things a little heavier, hit up Old Town Saloon this Saturday night for local rockers Roselawn. Things are sure to be off the hook as the guys belt out their signature brand of music so be sure to bring plenty of attitude to the table along with your thirst. Enjoy the night with no cover charge, drink specials, loud live music and multiple HDTV's.
Of course, this is just a mere sample of all the fun to be had in Wichita Falls this weekend so head out and enjoy everything Falls Town has to offer and kick off your Summer in style.
