Memorial Day Weekend - the official start of Summer and one of my absolute favorite holidays. I mean think about it...beer, barbecue and warm weather that leads to ladies walking around in bikinis can be nothing short of awesome.

Lest we forget, Memorial Day is also the time to honor our fallen heroes who gave everything for our country and as a veteran, I definitely don't want to downplay the significance of the holiday but for the purposes of this post I'll highlight the best ways to enjoy your weekend.

Head out to Lucy Park

You've gotta love an afternoon in the park and with Lucy Park there are a lot of activities to choose from. For one thing the park is huge - 178 acres along the Wichita River that provides an excellent backdrop for your festivities. The park features 2 large picnic shelters that can be reserved for no cost, 5 smaller picnic shelters, 30 individual picnic tables and 34 grills to choose from for your Memorial Day barbecue. For the kids, there are three modular playgrounds and for grown-up playtime you can indulge in an 18 hole disc golf course (my preference, BTW), basketball goals, two sand volleyball courts and one concrete volleyball court.

Spend the day at Castaway Cove

You definitely can't go wrong by kicking off the summer at the water park and Castaway Cove Waterpark provides The Falls with acres of rides, slides and attractions. You can slide your heart out in Parrot's Perch, an open flume slide complex that features a 40-foot high tower complete with two open flume slides and one U-shaped water thrill ride. Or you can go for their open and enclosed flume tube slide complex known as Storm Watch Tower that consists of one open and one enclosed serpentine and corkscrew tube slides. The park also features a family play area, tidal wave pool, "Lazy River" tube floating stream, lagoon pool and a sand volleyball court.

Annual Crime Stoppers Fun Run

Here's one for the bikers. The Annual Fun Run is a fundraising event to keep the Crime Stoppers program running. Crime Stoppers pays rewards for information leading to the arrest of people who commit felony crimes. The bikes line up at 7:30am Saturday at Eddie Hill's Fun Cycles with the first bike heading out at 9:00am. Food and drinks are provided at every stop and there's a silent auction at the ride's final destination, Texas Roadhouse. The cost of registration is $30 for the rider and $15 for the passenger. For more details call Crime Stoppers at 761-7778 and ask for Officer Woodruff or Officer Esteves.
